Green Roofs

We may think that green roofs are only ever seen on grand designs or city sky scrapers, but in line with governments policies all over the world to become more greener to help protect the planet, UK builders and home owners are looking to become environment friendly. Not only installing more efficient energy systems that use renewable energy, but also making use of resources, such as green roofs. MC Roofing have recently started to offer the service to not only source and install green roofs, but also offer a cost effective, hassle free maintenance solution.

Green roofs, also known as β€œliving” or β€œvegetated” roofs, is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with plants, which have been planted over a waterproofing membrane. Often containing additional layers such as root barrier, drainage and irrigation systems and insulation. These roofs are available in two types:

  • Extensive - usually consist of Sedum or similar plants, are light weight, requiring minimal maintenance and tend not to require any additional water irrigation
  • Intensive - usually consisting of plants, shrubs, planters, trees and turf/grass, similar to a traditional garden

Green roofs are a relatively new concept, therefore MC Roofing are able to advise and make recommendations on the type of roof, the aesthetics, the benefits, the process and provide you with a quote for installation and if required, ongoing maintenance, tailored to suit your requirements.

Here are a few of the benefits of green roofs:

  • Extends the life of the underlying waterproofing system
  • Improves roof insulation
  • Reduces rainfall runoff impacts (floods etc.)
  • Increases sound proofing
  • Increases the value of the property
  • Provides additional habitat for birds and plants, improving air quality and benefitting the environment
